You are currently viewing Teething at 3am…Good

I know, I know, where and in what world could it possibly be good to be up at 3 am in the morning with a teething one-year-old? With a little focus and reflection though joy can be found in almost anything. Focusing on that joy makes it really hard to be miserable.

I went to bed early (before 9 pm and was asleep by 10 pm).  That allowed for a solid 5 hours of sleep until Ainsley was screaming with her teething issues at 3 am. At least they are all coming in at once. By the time I got her back to sleep it was almost 4 am and there was no point in me trying to go back to sleep. I was actually quite chipper and ready to conquer the day (side note, being a morning person is not a trademark of mine). So, in the dark and quiet calm of an almost crisp fall morning, Quint and I went for a short walk; it was refreshing. I then got a quick workout in and since I was up early, I was able to do some morning yoga and relax just before KJ came down and greeted me ready for the day at 5:50 am. He is so pleasant in the morning and his smile just brightens the day. The kids were dropped off at daycare by 6:30 and I was rocking the day. I felt like I was one up on the best of KJ’s favorite super hero’s including Optimus Prime, Chase (both the Rescue Bot and Paw Patrol), Marshall, and Heatwave.

Before 9am I had done the following:

  • Soothed and cuddled with Ainsley
  • Enjoyed a walk in the dark and calm of the almost crisp morning air
  • Functional workout – 300 air squats
  • Yoga with Adrienne (YouTube) – she is my hero
  • Dressed 3 kids and dropped off at daycare (that’s probably the biggest feat)
  • Cleared out emails for work
  • Mowed the lawn
  • Last-minute prep for the house showings
  • Dressed for the day
  • Logged on for the day at work

Sometimes not getting a full night sleep (eight hours) is a gift in and of itself. A chance for some quiet, calm reflection, peace of mind and stillness while the rest of the world is asleep.

Finding the Joy

Take the time to think about what you are thankful for and what brings you joy.  As you do that the angst of 2020 or of whatever it is that may be causing you stress will begin to dissipate.

I am joyful that our baby girls Hadleigh and Ainsley are growing, joyful that they are healthy, joyful they are getting teeth, babbling up a storm, and crawling all over the place. I am also joyful the Kyle is now on daywork and can be home to help with the evening hustle and bustle that surrounds raising three young energetic children. After reflecting on this joy, the storm of 2020 that continues to brew outside our home whether it is regarding elections, COVID, or any of the other “Here Hold my Beer” moments becomes mute. What are you joyful for?
